Design School Interview;

What is your role at Design School: Educator

Describe yourself in 3 words: Passionate, Spontaneous, Loving

Why did you start/choose to work for Design School? I was a part of the first cohort of students to study at Design School. Best thing I ever did. I was approached after graduation to join the team and it was a no brainer. 6 years on and I still feel so in love and grateful

How long have you been working at Design School for? 6 years

What sparked your interest in design and decorating? When was this? I remember spending weekends decorating and rearranging my bedroom growing up. I then subscribed to Vogue Living and Belle magazine and the rest is history. My favourite past time was (and still is) indulging in my design magazines and mood boarding. I love a physical digital board to keep inspired. My favourite memory was buying my first inflatable sofa in the mid 90's so I could entertain my friends. So cool right!

If you had a superpower what would it be? We should be happy with who we are. But if I had to pick one it would be the Power of Love. "When the Power of Love Overcomes the Love of Power the world will know Peace" Jimi Hendrix

What are you famous for among your friends and family?  Infectious laugh. Welcoming vibe. "Mel fills the room with love and we forget all of our worries"

Do you have any pets?   Two adopted doggies; Chilli and Dusty

What are your hobbies outside of work? Being with my gorgeous children.  Basking in nature. You'll find me at the beach all year round. The sound of the ocean is my happy place. "There is no better designer than nature" Alexander McQueen. Cheese and a vino or four with my beautiful friends comes a close second

What’s your favourite [and most useful] app?  CHANI my Monday morning prep for the week aheah!

Anything that keeps me grounded when life tried to test you. Gratitude. Daily, motivation, inspiration, spiritual insight and love

What’s the most played song on your Spotify?  So hard, mood dependant. Jeff, Erykah, Seiko, Stevie, Lana, Sade, Anderson ... I could go on.  Music is life

Do you have a favourite colour? Pantone 555C or we can go green if that is less wanky haha

Who is your favourite interior designer? Truely don't have a favourite. YSG, Tom Mark Henry, Design by Golden

Describe your own personal design style. Touch excites me. Textures, layers, organic forms. I need to feel it deep in my soul. Raw, organic, imperfections that speak a thousand stories. I love colour, but more of a muddy girl than bold and flamboyant. Think Palm Springs meets Wabi Sabi 70s style ... Minimal, yet always warm and inviting.

Which room is your favourite to decorate, and why? The bathroom. Mixing materials, organic forms, textiles, lighting and greenery. Textural heaven. My bathroom is my sanctuary. It's where I bath, do yoga, breathe and dance. There has been many a dance party in the old tub too, ask my friends
